Shoulder Pain
Conditions
Shoulder Pain
Shoulder pain is discomfort in or around the shoulder joint. Common causes include rotator cuff injuries, bursitis, tendinitis, frozen shoulder, and arthritis. It can impair movement and strength in the shoulder.
Standard Medical Approach:
- Diagnosis: Physical exams, imaging tests like X-rays, MRIs, or ultrasounds.
- Treatment: Pain relievers, anti-inflammatories, physiotherapy, injections, and sometimes surgery.
Hito Holistic Approach
- Diagnosis: Comprehensive assessment including physical, neurological, myofascial, visceral, postural, energetical, emotional, and lifestyle factors.
- Treatment: Beyond the standard orthopaedic approach which should be applied in any physiotherapy clinic, we look at the shoulder also from other perspective. For example, viscerally the right shoulder is connected to the liver (anger) and the left one to the stomach (lack of digestion of life events). Therefore, suffering with these organs or their related emotions can affect one shoulder or the other. In ayurvedic medicine the top tip of the shoulder (acromion) corresponds to the minor chakra of the throat chakra, so it relates to a lack of expression. We can add to this concept that the right shoulder corresponds to a male energy while the left to a female energy. A certain condition of the right shoulder can reveal the struggle to express your male energy or to communicate with a male figure (father brother, friend, boss, colleague, etc). Instead, a condition of the left shoulder could be connected to a difficulty to express your female energy or in a communication with a female figure (mother, sister, friend, colleague, boss, etc.). In Chinese medicine the front shoulder pain is related to the lung (sadness) and large intestine (letting go) meridians while the posterior shoulder to the triple energiser (connected to the crown chakra) or the small intestine meridian (digestion and past traumas). The first important treatment comes from the myofascial therapies with the goal to melt any tension in the shoulder muscles. Mobilisations and manipulations can realign the shoulder in its socket. Visceral treatments can address the connections with stomach and liver. The acupuncture and energy healing can resolve the energy imbalances in the meridians, organs and chakras. Shoulder mobility and strengthening exercises can improve the range of motion and strength. Mindful strategies can help to resolve trauma, communication, calm the mind and bring relaxation towards emotional balance and burden relief.
